“It is not light that we need, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake.”

Frederick Douglass

According to the calendar it is just a few days until it is officially Spring- a most welcome time of year. One of the hallmarks of Spring is it’s storms. In nature, all is interconnected and those spring storms therefore must serve a purpose. They are sometimes quite scary. They are sometimes quite destructive. But a scary and destructive storm clears the way for new growth. The Oak tree’s roots grow deeper and stronger the more storms it weathers. And isn’t new growth what Spring is all about? If we want the growth and renewal we have to go through the fire and the thunder and the earthquake that Frederick Douglass was talking about. Living through a storm is often not pleasant and sometimes quite painful but it provides opportunity for growth and strength. Surviving through the whirlwind also brings us peace. The most peaceful times are often right after a storm when you hear that first bird chirp as it breaks the silence the raging wind left behind.

Some people avoid dealing with their problems because they are too scared of what storms may come along with facing down their problems. Those personal storms can be horribly messy and emotionally quite difficult to weather and clean up. At times, therapy can make you feel like you are in a torrent of emotion. It can be quite tempting to continue to just pretend there is nothing wrong and barricade yourself in an emotional space that is locked up tight where you feel secure just sitting there you and the problems together. No acknowledgement but no resolution either. It takes a certain amount of bravery to confront those personal storms. But if you have the right person to guide you through you will come out the other end of it the better for it. You will gain the most important type of peace; peace of mind. The garden of your personhood will be ready for renewal and you will begin to hear the birds chirping once again.
