What’s Your Mission Statement?
January 21, 2015 in Food for Thought
You may have noticed that businesses and organizations have mission statements. This statement is brief and explains the fundamental purpose of the company. It is often prominently displayed on websites (getbrainchange.com has ours on it) and may include the overall goals of the company after the mission statement. (Getbrainchange, com does).
But what about you? Should you have a mission statement to explain your purpose, who you are, what you want, and where you are going in your life? I believe you should! If you don’t have a destination (purpose) and a map (plan/goal) to get there you most likely won’t get very far. Okay, say you find some merit in a personal mission statement – what do you do next? A good way to start is to brainstorm what you’d like your life to be in, say, five years. If it helps to clarify, make categories. Like: relationships, career, education, financial, spiritual, social, or any categories you think might help you focus on you, what your life is about, where you are going. Be sure to identify your passions. These are what motivate and excite you, what you love to be and do, what bring joy into your life.
After you have brainstormed and identified your passions, study them and search for your direction. How your passions tell you who you are and where you want/need to go to become everything you can be, to reach your potential. Don’t focus on your age or how much money you have or your education, or anything you consider your limitations. This process might be called a fantasy to get you to the place you want to be in life as the person you really are.
Take your time and continue refining your mission statement until it feels really perfect for you. When you are passionate about this statement move on to your goals to make it happen.
